Flock to Peklemeer Flamingo Preserve

June 06, 2018

When you think of a tropical island, we are positive that one of the first native animals to pop into your mind is the Flamingo! But did you know that Bonaire is one of the only Flamingo breeding sites in all of the Southern Caribbean? And the flamingos that live in Bonaire are the most vibrantly pink variety of this species. Their delicious, rich pink color comes from the brine shrimp and algae that they consume on a regular basis.

If you want to see these beautiful birds a little closer, head over to Pekelmeer Flamingo Preserve. It's not possible to go up to the flats where they stay, but you can get a much closer look at these stunning creatures from here. The Preserve will even provide binoculars for those that cannot get enough. Stop by to learn more about these one-of-a-kind birds and get take a first-hand look at how they live their lives here on the island of Bonaire!
